IoT for tea gardens: what to measure first

Sensors are cheap, but data you never act on is not. A practical way to start monitoring an estate.

It is easy to buy sensors and hard to use what they report. The estates that get value start with one question they want answered, and measure only what answers it.

Start with soil moisture and rainfall

Irrigation and drainage decisions are where timing matters most. Soil moisture at a few representative points, plus rainfall, already tells you where to water, where to drain and where a problem is starting.

Add temperature and humidity next

These explain disease pressure and growth rate, and they help you compare blocks of the estate against each other.

Plan for connectivity before you buy

Many estates have patchy mobile coverage. Low-power radio links that gather readings at one gateway, which then uploads when it can, are usually more reliable than putting a SIM in every device.

Make the dashboard answer a decision

A good dashboard does not show every number. It shows which blocks need attention today and why, and it sends an alert when a reading crosses a limit you chose.

  • Choose one decision to improve first.
  • Place a few sensors, not hundreds, and learn from them.
  • Agree who acts when an alert arrives.
